The
Malcolm X Cultural Education Center (MXCEC) was founded in
Washington, DC in 1971 to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of
El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X. The Committee
created a celebration in the form of the Annual Malcolm X Day
Celebration, which has grown in size and importance to the
Washington, DC community. The Celebration attracts over 50,000
people, many of whom are between the ages of 14 to 25. The
committee's success has resulted in the Celebration being profiled
by the District of Columbia Government and the U.S. Park Service as
a model program for all activities held in the city.
The
MXCEC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit cultural arts education organization
created in 1979 to ensure the continuation of the Annual Malcolm X
Day Celebration, which has grown to a regional event, attracting
participants from New York to Richmond. Today, the MXCEC
offers year-round cultural activities aimed at the at-risk youth of
Washington, DC. The Center has been heralded for it's
outstanding educational programs that includes visits to schools,
churches and prisons. The MXCEC regularly visits the Oak Hill
Youth Facility, a maximum security rehabilitation center for teenage
boys. In December, the Center sponsors the Annual Kwanzaa Food
Drive which allows them to donate turkeys and canned goods to the
homeless and hungry in the Washington, DC community.
The
MXCEC has been committed to the spreading of Malcolm's message and
vision with a particular focus on the youth. The Center enjoys
wide-spread public support and a strong volunteer base. To
